previous issue’s puzzle
There once Was a Man From Nantucket
There was a counting error in the clues which
several of you pointed out. It turns out that “
perpetuities” has 12 letters, not 11. “Embarrassed”
has 11, though, and “apologies” has nine, I think.
Set #1—a curious Fellow
Soared—“So dear” anagram
Stupidity—“Study pi? It” anagram
Morbidity—“I mob Dirty” anagram
Board—Bored (“blasé”) homophone
Illiquidity—ILL (“Sickly”) + I + QU (“question”) +ID (“the wild impulse”) + IT
+ Y “yields at the outset”)
Set #2—perspicacious Gwen Pensions—Half of a double definition (“Boardinghouses”) Underfunded—“Freud dunned” anagram Dimensions—“Ion in dimness” anagram Misapprehensions—“Rose, is penmanship” anagram Did—DIED (“Bombed like a standup comic”)—E (“with no energy”)
A Lifer designing annuities
Encountered a few incongruities.
“All my clients seem able
To outlive my table,
As if we had sold perpetuities.”
There But for the Grace of God
All Al needed was one more exam,
So he said, “I’ll wholeheartedly cram.”
Ah, but others crammed more,
Only one out of four
Passed. When Al got a five he said, “Damn.”
Set #3—The lifer (plus one from There But for the Grace of God)
Incongruities—“coinsuring tie” anagram
Perpetuities—PER (“Each”) + PET (“animal companion”) + UNITIES (“Aris-
totelian principles”)—N (“dismissing no”)
Crammed—(S)CRAMMED (“Vamoosed a little late”)
Able—Half of a double definition (“Like Napoleon, before seeing Elba” from
the palindrome “able was I ere I saw Elba”)
Gwen said, “Working in Government Pensions
Has ever so many dimensions!
We found one—that is, Dunne did--
Which was not underfunded!
And to think I had misapprehensions!”
Set #4—a Tendentious Gal
Impartiality—IMP (“Pixie”) + ART (“painting”) + I (“one”) + ALI (“clay (
formerly)”) + T (“tablespoon”) + Y (“yellow”)
Causality—C(AU)(SAL)ITY (“City containing gold, Sal”)
Fits—Half of a double definition (“Conniptions”)
Mortality—MOR(T)ALITY (“Morality over earliest of trepidations”)
Bits—B (“Second rate”) + ITS (“it is”)
A Tendentious Gal
I once knew a gal in Mortality,
Who possessed no real impartiality.
She was fond of her fits.
Oh, she loved them to bits!
And would call correlation causality.
Set #5—There But for the Grace of God
Damn—Dam (“Stop”) homophone
Exam—Ex-AM -“Formerly in the morning” pun
Four—Fore (“Verbal warning from a golfer!”) homophone
A Curious Fellow
A Fellow deep into morbidity,
Had some issues around illiquidity.
His expense account soared
When his kid’s room and board
He put through—OK, that’s just stupidity.
