policy and professionalism issues. I believe that even if you disagree with a
specific position being taken, all actuaries recognize the value to the profession
of having a strong, respected, nonpartisan voice addressing public policy
issues at the federal and state levels.
Therefore, it is time to investigate a single dues option for actuaries that would
automatically enroll every CAS and SOA
member practicing in the United States
as a member of the Academy. The resulting increase in membership would have
the added benefit of lowering per capita
membership dues. Since the Academy
is the umbrella organization for the U.S.
profession, every U.S. actuary should be
a member.
I consider the Academy to be the
umbrella organization because the

Council of U.S. Presidents (CUSP) is an
Academy board committee that helps

Most working groups within the five
U.S. organizations have members who
are also members of other groups with
a similar focus and can serve as intraor-
ganizational liaisons. It’s not a perfect
system—obvious overlap exists in many
areas, and the process could be more
formalized. But it works reasonably
well. The key is communication among
the organizations, and the existence of
CUSP ensures that information is shared
at a high level.
